Need another reason to enter this contest? Here’s what co-author Lorene Edwards Forkner told us about her favorite ways to preserve fresh foods:
“My favorite recipes? Hmmmm… it’s such a seasonal thing. Raspberries are just coming to market, and I love plain and simple raspberry jam. Later in the summer I get crazy with the more exotic stuff. There’s a fabulous recipe for pickled eggplant chutney (pg. 108 in my book) that got us through a cold and miserable rainy 4th of July on cheese and crackers…like a breath of summer. It must have worked because the weather’s been beautiful ever since.
I know it’s not really backyard preserving but the spicy ginger syrup (p. 171) is amazing in cocktails, sparkling water or wine, or in hot spiced apple cider. Ummmmm – a true favorite. (That page in my copy of the book is well-spattered and loved. NOTE: you gotta try the spicy version at the bottom of the page with cardamom, cloves and black pepper!)”
Listeners, if you’re eager to get your book all “well-splattered and loved” by trying out all these great recipes, enter this contest NOW. Best of luck to all contestants!

I plan to can salsa, but not sure what else. This book would be great for some inspiration!

I loved the interview, so much great information and tips for the beginner like me. Theresa was so well spoken. Loved the questions the hosts asked her, and the history on salt the host shared was interesting too.
Thanks for your comments Jamie and Tiffany! We were really excited about this interview and love that canning has made a comeback. So many great reasons to preserve food.
You both are entered into the contest for our book giveaway. Increase your chances by participating in one of the other entry options.
Best of luck!
This is my first year canning! I mainly plan to can tomatoes – whole, sauce, salsa, etc.
I ‘put up’ peaches this morning, always make jellies and pickles for Christmas gifts. Tomatoes are coming in, so spaghetti sauce and salsa will soon be going into jars. Started canning with help from Great grandma, grandma’s and Mom about 55 years ago. The theory they used was if you could wash a jar or use a knife, you were ‘big enough’ to help.
Growing up, as teenagers most of my friends and I helped ladies in our community can the garden produce to feed hungry families through the winter.
I still enjoy canning, and have taught my girls and many friends and neighbors.
Would love to have the book to use and share.
I’m so glad to hear that so many people are wanting to can!
And thanks for the kind comments Tiffany. I appreciate it!!
Hi Jayme… canning is HOT and it’s so COOL! I’ve talked with ladies in their 80′s who still stick to their tried and true recipes for crock pickles – my last summer favorite! Thanks for mentioning my book – I want to hear of other’s well spattered and loved pages. yes you CAN, pickle, smoke and salt… Cheers!
I hadn’t even thought of smoking anything Lorene. That’s got me thinking! I just love that canning & preserving is hot right now, and hopefully for a long time to come! There are so many recipes and methods, who can get bored?
