Book Review: Rosalind Creasy’s New Edible Landscaping is Here!

1 Comment 11 November 2010

Edible Landscaping $39.95 paperback, 432 pages

Have you heard? Growing your own food is the hottest new trend. Of course you have. You can’t open up a publication these days without reading some headline about food safety, high food prices or the benefits of starting your own garden. But really, the term edible landscaping was coined over 30 years ago by garden designer and writer Rosalind Creasy.

Are you looking to start your first garden, transform your front yard into an edible wonderland, or just sneak in a few edibles into your flower beds? Whatever your motivation, allow Rosalind Creasy to personally help you create a gorgeous garden (that you can eat too!) with her new book Edible Landscaping.

Why You Should Own A Copy of Edible Landscaping:

  • Over 30 years of edible landscaping design experience in one book!
  • She covers it all: designing with vegetables, herbs, fruits and berries and even small space gardening.
  • Learn how to implement landscape design principles (balance, unity, scale, line, simplicity, etc) with vegetables, herbs, fruit trees and berries. I felt like she was personally walking me through her design process.
  • Over 300 full-color images of beautiful edible gardens (see below).
  • Ideas for designing with edible container gardens.
  • DIYers will drool over the beautiful project ideas.
  • The Encyclopedia of Edibles section is a book in itself. All the information you need to grow any edible you want.
  • Suggestions on which edibles to use as ground covers, hedges, screens, borders, shrubs, etc.

I Highly Recommend this Book!

You may, or may not know, that I love design and I love gardening. In my experience, few books do both well. You either get a design-minded book full of principles that can only be implemented by trained professionals, or an in-depth home garden handbook that leaves you wondering, “what looks good with what?”

I love Rosalind’s emphasis on design. Not to worry beginners, she offers up plenty of information about the basics of gardening in the index section. She has not forgotten where she started from over 30 years ago. On the other hand, her book will tempt even the most loyal ornamental gardeners with her fabulous photos, design tips and unexpected edible plant combinations.

I’m a big advocate of befriending a local garden expert or two. They can be your neighbor, friend or family member; to share ideas and trouble shoot garden disasters with.  In the absense of a personal garden expert, Edible Landscaping is the perfect companion. Other garden design books read so institutional, with horticulture and design concepts that fly right over my head. You know the kind, those eureka moments that only come after the trial and error period. Not so with Rosalind Creasy’s book.  This book is for the beginning gardener to the self-proclaimed expert.
